When Parkdalians got word earlier this year that the iconic Skyline Restaurant was shuttering, tears were shed. For years and years, owner Louie — only ever seen in a white shirt and black vest combo — had presided over the winsome space. There, open-faced turkey sandwiches were served, dessert was Jell-O with whipped cream, and classic tunes played overhead. So when locals heard that Skyline had been bought, both hope and fear were felt. Fortunately, it was in the best of hands.
With Maggie Ruhl of Roncy’s The Ace diner in cahoots with her very own brother Jud, of Bloordale’s 3 Speed, diners knew that Skyline’s character would be preserved. The new restaurant has merely been given a facelift; the blood-red banquettes are still in place and the menu sticks to elevated diner fare. Our pick for a lazy brunch is the eggs Florentine; two perfectly poached eggs with spinach (for health purposes) sit atop English muffins and are doused with plenty of Hollandaise. Home fries and an arugula salad round out the meal, which must certainly be paired with a super spicy Caesar with all the horseradish.
If you can’t make it midday, Skyline also does a mean burger night on occasion as well as real spiffy desserts like coconut cream pie (just check out their Instagram feed.)
