About the Restaurant

Hailing from Calgary, Jelly Modern Doughnuts opened its first Toronto location on College St. last week — just in time for National Doughnut Day. Inspired by places like the Doughnut Plant in New York City, co-owner Rita Tripathy — along with her husband Murray Coleman and her sister Rosanne Tripathy — opened the first Jelly Modern shop in April 2011.

Behind the sweet treats is chef Grayson Sherman, previously the executive chef at the now-closed Saint Germain restaurant at Calgary’s Hotel Arts. Since the original shop’s opening, the doughnuts have been featured extensively on Food Network Canada on shows like You Gotta Eat Here, and even the Big O (that’s Oprah, of course) has given them props.

Inside the fun, modern shop are yeast doughnuts or cake doughnuts in almost two dozen flavours, like classic jelly, maple bacon, lemon curd, s’mores, peanut butter cup, London fog, red velvet, vanilla birthday cake or whoopie pie.

As far as pricing goes, it’s gourmet for $2.75 each, three-bite doughnuts for $2.25 each, gluten sensitive for $3.25 each and one dozen for $29.95.
