Toronto-born and Los Angeles–based celebrity stylist Hayley Atkin got her start at FQ Magazine as an intern for Jeanne Beker. Within a few years, she moved stateside and now she’s a sought-after stylist in L.A.
Who are some of the celebrities that you’ve styled looks for?
Sandra Bullock, Hilary Duff, Lake Bell, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kacey Musgraves, Sally Field, Beth Behrs, Olivia Cooke, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jennifer Nettles and Mindy Kaling.
What is it like styling a celebrity like Mindy Kaling, who already has such a defined personal style?
It’s the best. When a celebrity, such as Mindy, understands her style so well, it also makes my job easier. I can really zero in and focus on what looks best. Oftentimes that means I’ll have two to three racks of clothes in each fitting where everything we try on looks great.
How would you describe your personal style?
I am a minimalist. I spend so much time fussing over other people, I have very little time or interest in dressing myself. I want it to be an easy process, so I tend to wear a lot of black and white. I look for styles that hang on the body very well and are comfortable.
What is your go-to boutique or shop in Toronto?
When I go home, it is mostly to visit family, so I try to not shop! But from my childhood I was always fond of Kensington Market. I would spend all my weekends there buying up vintage clothes, denim and, of course, crystals at Courage My Love. Remembering this is making me want to go back there now.
How do you feel about the fashion industry in Toronto?
I’ve always found the industry in Toronto to be an exciting place filled with so many talented designers. I think it is difficult to make it in the fashion industry because it is more limited than, say, New York or L.A. But all the designers and stylists are so incredibly talented and produce some of the finest clothing and accessories in the world.
