Forget doughnuts and cupcakes, move over macarons, the eclair is the next big thing. The romantic French pastry is popping up in patisseries citywide, including one eclair-only outpost. So we invited the duo behind Petite Thuet, chef Marc Thuet and his wife Biana Zorich, to suss out the city’s best.
Roselle, 362 King St. E., $7
“I like the crispiness of the choux (the pastry dough) and the presentation,” says Thuet of the banana cream pie eclair.
Thobors, 627 Mt. Pleasant Rd., $4.25
“This one is the best for me as far as the choux and the custard,” says Zorich. “It’s classic and beautiful. I love it.”
Nugateau, 717 Queen St. W., $4.50
“It’s a close runner-up because it’s an acquired taste, but nice flavour combo,” says Thuet of the maple bacon eclair.
Rahier, 1586 Bayview Ave., $4.35
“It looks good. The choux is fine, but the custard is too creamy,” says Zorich. Thuet adds, “It’s a bit too runny but tastes good.”
A green dream
Delysees, 780 King St. W., $4.50
Thuet and Zorich are quick to notice the presentation of this pistachio eclair, but both wish the flavour were stronger.
Chocolada, 180 Steeles Ave. W., $2.75
“You don’t taste the pistachio. You can see it in the paste inside, but you don’t taste it enough,” says Thuet.
The Tempered Room, 1374 Queen St. W., $3.75
“I’m not a fan of sesame,” says Zorich, but likes the Japanese infusion of matcha.
La Boheme, 2481 Yonge St., $5
“The texture is not right; it shouldn’t be that wide,” says Zorich. But Thuet adds that “the taste is there; it’s not bad.”

“This one is good,” starts Thuet. Zorich adds, “Vanilla with a chocolate glaze, I like that. This one is good.”
